Stainless Steel. Stainless steel is a ferrous alloy with increased corrosion resistance due to the addition of chrome and nickel. In order to obtain a chrome-oxide and nickel-oxide surface that is of a high-grade purity and homogeneity, thus achieving optimal corrosion resistance, the Royal Botania frames are etched and subjected to a passivating process as a standard treatment. Chlorine (note: sea salt is sodium chlorine) is steel's greatest enemy. For this reason, it is recommended that near the coast this metal be given a surface made as smooth as possible in order to increase the resistance to corrosion even further. The smoother the surface the less porous it is. The lower the porosity, the lower the possibility of dirt deposits accumulating on the metal surface, and thus, the lower the risk of corrosion. Royal Botania produces their furniture with two kinds of stainless steel:
Electro-polished stainless steel underwent an electrochemical process to give the metal extra protection against corrosion.
Brushed stainless steel, better known as Inox, is an iron alloy in which corrosion resistance is increased by adding chrome and nickel.
Royal Botania recommends electro-polished stainless steel frames if furniture is used in a corrosive environment.
Aluminum or Powder-Coated Aluminum. Aluminum is perfect for outdoor use due to its light weight and being highly weather resistant. But also as it is easy to care for: just use mild soap and water (no metal scrubbers please) to clean the surface. To repair minor scratches caused by handling, use touch-up pens in corresponding color.
Ceramics. Ceramic table tops are made of inorganic materials that crystallize at very high temperatures and are thus very hard and resistant to wear. This material, with a sleek and modern appearance, is distinguished by the following exceptional properties:
Caring for Ceramics. Ceramic table tops are easy to clean with a sponge and an all-purpose household cleaner. Afterwards, rinse and/ or wipe off to avoid streaks. Although the ceramic surface is extremely hard and wear-resistant, we do not recommend the use of cleaners with an abrasive or polishing action. Use only sponges, soft nylon brushes or cloths. Do not use brushes with hard bristles. Algae and moss can occur in places that remain cool and moist for prolonged periods of time and which are exposed to very little sunlight. Thanks to the closed surface, algae and moss will only grow on the top of the surface, making good cleaning very easy.
Glass. Its resistance to staining and scratching makes glass a highly suitable material when making tabletops for outdoor furniture. The white, pearl gray, café latte and black versions have a matt acid-washed finish, which are even more scratch and fingerprint resistant as shiny surfaces. Royal Botania recommends the tabletop is cleaned regularly so dirt can not burn into the surface. This is especially important with black glass.
Teak. As Royal Botania never compromises on quality, only mature, carefully selected, fully grown teakwood is used, all of it harvested in accordance with the strictest environmental standards. The wood's renowned durability is due to its high content of natural oils. The resulting minimal moisture absorption prevents warping and thus gives teak its enormous stability. In addition, teakwood is highly resistant to attacks by pests. It is because of these qualities of matured teakwood, as well as its exceptionally beautiful color and structure, that it is a premium wood especially suitable for outdoor environments.
Caring for Teak. The beautiful thing about teak furniture is that you really don't have to do anything to maintain it unless you really want to. Set it up and leave it out all year long, and it will still hold up year after year, no matter where you live. It's able to withstand climate changes without cracking or warping (or needing maintenance). It will change color as it ages, and the eventual result is a distinguished silver gray color that is a mark of true teak furniture.
But if you prefer the golden brown color of new teak you should click here, for products that can help maintain that color longer. We'll warn you: maintaining the golden brown color will take some work. Our recommendation is to let your teak weather.
One final note: DO NOT use teak oil on your teak furniture if you're planning to use it outdoors! Adding oil will cause your beautiful teak furniture to turn black with mildew. It's a bad idea, and something we learned the hard way. As tempting as it is, don't do it. The furniture has enough oil in it already to last for decades, you don't need to replenish it.
