Solid Hardwood Construction The wood furniture shown on these pages is made of solid black cherry from the Appalachian Mountains and crafted in workshops in that same region. These mountains, some of the oldest in the world, provide a unique combination of four seasons and moderate altitude that help give the cherry its strength and graceful graining. Out-of-sight parts like backs and bottoms are made from solid sugar pine from the Pacific Northwest. Unlike Eastern and European pine, sugar pine has few knots, tight graining and old-growth stability. No man-made wood components or veneers are used.
Old World Craftsmanship Each piece of our cherry wood furniture is hand crafted to order, one piece at a time, by individual workers, not assembly lines. Our woodworkers do not subscribe to many of the shortcuts now considered standard in more conventional furniture factories. Instead, they still utilize the same construction techniques mortises, tenons, floating panels, shiplaps and dovetails used centuries ago in building fine antiques. Our woodworkers take pride in the quality of their work and sign each piece upon completion.
Hand-Rubbed Finish We finish our furniture in a true hands-on process developed to highlight, not cover, the look and feel of cherry. Our finishers start by hand-rubbing a pigmented-rich oil stain over every inch of the furniture in a board-by-board process that highlights cherry's subtle graining, instead of simply painting over it. The work concludes with the application of a low-sheen, cotton-based lacquer that protects wood without a glassy cover or the requirement of periodic re-oiling—but it does not eliminate the need for coasters! Our finish will hold up to almost any chemical in your home, from water to wine to fingernail polish remover. It requires no waxing or oiling…just use a soft rag to wipe off whatever lands on it. Water is the primary enemy of solid wood. Our finish protects wood from water better than oils and traditional lacquers do. In most homes a small puddle of water will fully evaporate before creating any damage to a table top.
Care For Cherry Dust regularly with a soft, non-abrasive cloth, always following the grain of the wood. Should your furniture actually need cleaning, use a mild soap and a slightly damp sponge, then quickly wipe dry. You will not need to wax or oil Curran cherry furniture. Please do not polish more than once a month and avoid silicone –based polishes and all commercial cleaners. Cherry will darken as it ages. Exposure to direct sunlight accelerates this process. To prevent light and dark patterns from developing in the first years of ownership, please keep your furniture away from windows and make sure to rotate or periodically remove items placed on their tops. Wood tends to “breath” with changes in moisture and humidity. Extreme exposure to heat can dry out furniture and cause it to crack. Prolonged contact with water or dramatic increased in humidity can cause furniture to swell, warp and split. Always use a coaster or other protective padding when placing hot dishes or cold beverages on your furniture.
Customization Options We work constantly to expand our selection of hand crafted hardwood furniture, so it’s easy to find the perfect piece for your home. Still don’t see exactly what you want? Maybe you’d prefer a spoonfoot to a Shaker leg on your table? Wood knobs instead of metal on that buffet? Maybe the style is right, but the size isn’t quite—not to worry, we can customize nearly every piece to suit your needs. Contact us to discuss what you need.
Environmentally Responsible Our Appalachian hardwood cherry is carefully sourced from purveyors who employ careful, sustainable harvesting practices. Our woodworkers strive to build furniture that will long outlast the trees that afford them their craft. We subscribe to a philosophy that nothing in nature should be wasted. Our workshop gives its scrap wood to local artisans for carving and basket making. Local farmers use the sawdust and wood shavings for livestock bedding. And everything else goes to the workshop's employees and neighbors to help heat their homes in the winter.
Naturally Unique Please be mindful that small dark patterns and slight changes in color are naturally occurring properties of cherry and how it grows in the forest. In no way do such natural properties of the wood lessen the quality of furniture made from it. In fact, quite the opposite: we believe that these differences in wood grain patterns and color enhance the individuality, value and beauty of the furniture we sell.
